The Y2K Look is Taking Over TikTok
We have all heard the phrase "fashion is cyclical," and the current trends are only helping to prove the phrase as Y2K, or early 2000s fashion, comes back into style.
We usually see a group leading the charge as new fashion trends arise. This time, that group is TikTok users.
What is TikTok?
TikTok is a short-form video platform that was introduced in 2017. Still, the app only became popular once merging with Musically in 2018. Since then, TikTok has taken the world by storm, and people of all ages use the app for entertainment.
TikTok has also introduced the world to a particular group of influencers, most of whom fall into the Gen Z age bracket. This group of influencers is very fashion-forward, and many of the young people on the platform look to them for fashion inspiration. So it comes as no surprise that TikTok acts as an influence on fashion trends today.
The Y2K Look
Y2K is often used as a short form for the year 2000, and Y2K fashion is a style inspired by the year 2000. Y2K popularized track pants, mini skirts, denim, and exposed midriffs. TikTok influencers have been fully embracing the trend, which is only growing in popularity.
Charli D’Amelio
Charli D'Amelio is a well-known TikTok influencer with a sizable following. Although her content is not based on this fashion style, she definitely doesn't shy away from the look. She made a post to Instagram to show off one of her Y2 K-inspired looks with the caption "ironically hot or something."
Her photos featured her in a pair of light wash, bootcut denim jeans and a baby tee printed with the words "ironically hot." She finished her look with one of the most iconic Y2K pieces - a navy blue Juicy Couture zip-up hoodie.
The rest of her look even compliments the Y2K fashion, as her bright blue eyeshadow is reminiscent of the era. She also poses with a digital camera for some of the photos.
Addison Rae
Addison Rae is another creator who doesn't necessarily focus her content on the style. Still, she utilizes it in her everyday life.
She made a recent Instagram post featuring herself and several animals at the Zoo2U farm. In her post, her style is certainly reminiscent of the Y2K era.
She is pictured in a pair of low-rise, relaxed-fit jeans and a zip-up, cropped hoodie.
Taylor Quitara
Taylor Quitara is a lesser-known creator whose content is more focused on style and fashion, with a focus on the Y2K style. She often posts videos about how to style different looks that follow the trends of that era.
Juicy Couture is one of her favorite trends from the time, and we can't blame her. The tracksuits are a stylish but cozy look, so you get the best of both worlds.
So, Should You Embrace the Style?
As usual, it is totally up to you, but we don't see this trend going anywhere soon. If anything, we expect it to evolve and change, but there is nothing wrong with having a few Y2K staples in your closet to hold on to. We definitely have a few pieces in our closets to add to our looks.
